Endoscopic ultrasound is a state-of-the-art diagnostic technique that combines a regular endoscopic exam with an ultrasound and tissue sampling to locate difficult-to-see tumors or other abnormalities in the esophagus, stomach, colon, pancreas, lymph nodes and bile duct.

For the endoscopic ultrasound, we use an endoscope with an ultrasound probe incorporated into its tip that gives us a view of the GI tract, surrounding tissues, organs, and lymph nodes.  This is a specialized procedure only performed by Dr. Colizzo. 

We're able to see abnormalities and benign tumors as well as tiny cancers that can hide in GI tract walls-cancers which may not show up clearly with standard endoscopy, abdominal ultrasound or CT scanning. If we suspect cancer, we can take tissue samples (biopsies) with a small needle. Endoscopic ultrasound also allows us to examine structures in the chest, abdomen, and pelvis that are near the digestive tract. The procedure lasts 30 to 45 minutes.  A sedative is used during the procedure to relax you and allow you to sleep through the procedure.
