Barrett's Esophagus is a pre-cancerous condition of the esophagus that arises from chronic reflux.  Radiofrequency Ablation can be used to eradicate Barrett's tissue from the esophagus, and may prevent esophageal cancer.

Ablation therapy for Barrett’s esophagus is performed in conjunction with upper endoscopy. The treatment is performed in an outpatient setting and no incisions are involved.  We first administer either sedation or anesthedia to allow you to sleep through the procedure.  With an endoscope, we examine the esophagus, then a specialized endoscope is inserted and heats the areas affected by Barrett's Esophagus.  Areas are treated twice. 

A follow-up procedure for reassessment and retreatment is scheduled at two months. If there remains any residual Barrett’s tissue, the area is retreated.  People with small amounts of Barrett's tissue usually require 2-3 visits for complete eradication of the Barrett's tissue.  People with large amounts of Barrett's tissue may require more treatments.

Seacoast Gastroenterology, in conjuction with Exeter Hospital, was the first practice on the seacoast to offer this groundbreaking procedure.
